Looking for weekend getaways from the Bay Area that are actually doable with kids?
These are our favorite family-friendly Northern California escapes, all within driving distance from the Bay Area (under 4hrs). Think beach towns, cozy cabins, glamping spots, and easy hotel stays that feel like a break without the airport chaos.
If you’re searching for weekend getaways from the Bay Area with kids, start here.
Wildhaven Yosemite (Mariposa)
If you’ve ever wanted to “camp” without actually camping , this is it.
Wildhaven Yosemite is a glamping resort just outside Yosemite National Park. Think safari-style tents with real beds, heaters and electricity. You're surrounded by a beautiful property of lush, rolling hills and just minutes away from Yosemite National Park. This is such an easy intro to actual camping.
It's perfect for families who want nature + comfort. Read more about our time there here.

Huttopia Wine Country (Sonoma County)
Huttopia Wine Country feels like a European summer camp in the best way.
Located in Sonoma County, this glamping stay offers tents, pool access, outdoor games, bike rentals, winery tours, on-site cafe, and seasonal family programming
It’s rustic but curated, and makes for a very easy weekend getaway from the Bay Area.

Acqua Hotel (Marin County)
For something simple and scenic, Acqua Hotel in Marin is such an underrated gem.
It sits right on the water with bay views and offers complimentary wine + cheese every evening and breakfast each morning, and it’s close to Sausalito, Muir Woods, Tennessee Valley hikes, Marin Country Mart, parks, and more. While we were in the area we also visited Fox + Kit Cafe Playspace and Slide Ranch for their family farm day… both places were awesome! This is a great low-lift weekend for families who want fresh air and a short drive.
Santa Cruz – Seacliff Inn (Aptos)
We love a Santa Cruz weekend!
Seacliff Inn Aptos makes it easy- it has a heated pool, central location, and close to Seacliff State Beach.
Things to do in the area include Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Natural Bridges State Beach, Henry Cowell Redwoods, Leo’s Haven Playground. It's a great easy, laid-back coastal weekend with kids. Check out our itinerary here.
The Flamingo Resort (Santa Rosa)
Flamingo Resort & Spa is colorful, retro, and surprisingly family-friendly.
Some of the highlights were the huge pool, lawn games, fun vibes without feeling stuffy. There's also a great spa and fitness center with childcare provided! While we were there we visited Safari West, Children's Museum of Sonoma County, and also checked out EpiCenter for a fun day of arcade, bowling and jumping around the trampoline gym. And since it's wine county, after all, don't miss all the nearby breweries and wineries in the area.
Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe
Margaritaville Resort Lake Tahoe is such a fun Tahoe stay, especially if you want a hotel vibe over a cabin rental. This location is walkable to Heavenly Village (where you can catch the gondola up the mountain, ice skate, or do some shopping and dining).
Great for both summer lake trips and winter snow weekends!

The Westin St. Francis (San Francisco)
Yes, a city staycation counts!
The Westin St. Francis s iconic and close to cable cars, Chinatown, Ferry Building, Pier 39, Salesforce Park, Children's Creativity Museum and right across the street from Union Square. It’s a great way to experience San Francisco with kids without the commute.
Three Pines Place (Arnold)
Three Pines Place is a cozy cabin escape in Calaveras County. It's close to Calaveras Big Trees State Park, lake swimming in summer, hiking and snow play in winter. It’s quiet, nature-filled, and ideal for unplugged family time. Check out this blog post for more on our time spent in Arnold.
Sonora & Tuolumne County
Gold Country makes such a fun and educational weekend. We stayed at the Straw Bale House and exploredColumbia State Historic Park, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, skied at Dodge Ski Resort and went tubing at Leland Snow Play. We also checked out Cover's Apple Ranch where we saw farm animals, rode a steam train and had a delicious brunch! Read more about our adventures in Tuolumne County here.
The Meritage Resort and Spa (Napa)
The Meritage Resort and Spa is one of the more family-friendly Napa resorts.
Yes — Napa with kids works. There’s a large pool, open lawn space, easy access to Oxbow Public Market, seasonal family programming, and of course it's close to some great wineries. Last time we stayed here we loved Larson's Family Winery and Sonoma TrainTown. It’s a relaxed way to experience wine country as a family.
Casa de Fruta (Hollister)
Casa de Fruta is the most unexpected family stop — and kids LOVE it.
There’s a small train ride, carousel, fruit stand + restaurant, a playground on-site, RV park and cabins
It’s cute, nostalgic, and perfect for a short overnight getaway from the Bay Area.
