About the Golden Gate Bandshell The Golden Gate Bandshell is the oldest structure in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse. The original bandstand was built in 1882, with the current structure being built in 1900. Also called the Spreckels Temple of Music, the current Bandshell was a gift to San Franciscans from sugar magnate Claus Spreckels. The Golden Gate Park Band The Golden Gate Park Band has presented free concerts in Golden Gate Park since 1882. It is one of the oldest professional Concert Bands in the United States. The season runs from late-April to early-October. The Band offers a variety of music, including classic favorites, opera, marches, Broadway tunes, big band swing, and original works. Concerts are free, family-friendly, and typically start at 1 p.m. on Sundays (as well as July 4 and Labor Day), lasting approximately 90 minutes. Illuminate LIVE 2026 Season Illuminate LIVE has kicked off its 2026 season, featuring more than 125 free performances through mid-November. The weekly schedule includes: Midweek Melodies: Wednesdays Friday Happy Hour: Fridays Crucial Reggae Sundays: Sundays Special Events: Select Saturdays and cultural celebrations Renovated in 2020 with state-of-the-art sound and lighting, the bandshell continues its 1900 mission of providing free music for the public. Today, it serves as a vibrant outdoor venue for independent artists, local legends, and community gatherings.
